The widget is not showing a question

Open Hanzi Keeper once. The app prepares the next three days of questions when it runs, and iOS will not start it in the background if it has been swiped away from the app switcher. After it has run once, the widget keeps going on its own.

Tapping an answer on the Lock Screen does nothing

iOS may ask you to unlock before it runs a widget's button. Look at your phone to unlock it with Face ID and tap again. You can also tap the tile outside its two answers: the app opens on the same question, with four choices, and your answer counts just the same.

How often does a question come?

Every 30 minutes unless you change it: Settings, Lock Screen, New question offers every 30 minutes, hour or 2 hours, day and night. After you answer, the tile keeps the answer and shows when the next question comes. Pro adds every 15 minutes, and Once answered: the next question comes a minute after you answer, and stays until you answer it.

Can it remind me?

Yes, if you like: Settings, Daily reminder. Once a day at the time you choose, and only on a day when you have not answered a question from a widget yet. It is off until you turn it on.

What is the evening recap?

On a day when you have answered five questions or more on the widgets by 8 p.m., or by the time you choose, one notification comes at that time. It says how many you answered, never how many you missed. Tap it for a recap of about a minute: up to ten of the characters you answered that day, the ones you missed first, each with four choices. Answers in Practice do not count toward the five. It is free, and it comes once a day at most.

How do I turn off the recap, or change its time?

Settings, Evening recap. Turn off Offer a recap in the evening, or choose another time, from noon to midnight.

Why does the recap arrive quietly?

Because the app never shows you a permission prompt for it. Instead, iOS delivers it quietly: it goes to Notification Center only, with no banner and no sound, and iOS offers there to keep it or turn it off. To see it as a banner, tap Show as a banner in Settings, Evening recap, and iOS asks you to allow notifications. If you have already allowed Hanzi Keeper's notifications, the recap comes like any other. If notifications are off for the app in the iPhone's Settings, it does not come.

Why does the free version stop at 3,500 characters?

That is everyday Chinese: the size of China's own list of characters in common use, which covers about 99.5% of modern text. The free version works on all of them, a hundred at a time on the Lock Screen. Pro watches every character you know and opens the rest of the collection: specialist, literary and name characters, 9,312 in all.

What does Focus do?

Focus comes with Pro. In Settings, New characters, Focus, choose one of 19 topics, such as food and drink, travel, or work and money, or Everything, the default. New characters then come from that topic first; when it has none left to bring in, they come in the usual order again. The Lock Screen also asks about the topic more often, but not only: its characters that need review come up ahead of others equally at risk, yet never more than a few in a row while one outside it is waiting, so characters slipping elsewhere still come up. Practice gets a Focus mode, with the topic's characters you have started. A character can belong to two topics, or to none.

What are the Pro widgets?

Two Home Screen widgets that come with Pro. The small one asks the question with two choices, like the Lock Screen, and also shows in StandBy. The large one asks it with up to four choices and shows today's answers and, once you answer, when the next question comes. All the widgets ask the same question, so a question answered on one is answered on all. Two choices are easier to guess than four, so those answers count for less. Without Pro, the two widgets show a note, and tapping it opens the Pro screen in the app. The Lock Screen widget and the medium Home Screen widget are free.

What does saving a character do?

It keeps it in Characters, under Saved, and in Practice, under Saved. If you had not started it yet, it also joins your Lock Screen as a new character.

Where the Chinese comes from

Characters, readings and meanings come from CC-CEDICT (English) and CFDICT (French), both under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licences; Japanese and Korean meanings were translated for the app from the English and reviewed. Structure and the Japanese and Korean readings come from Unicode's Han database. The common words are counted, and most example sentences chosen, from Tatoeba, whose sentences are written by people (Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 France). Where Tatoeba had no sentence showing a character's everyday meaning, one was written for the app. The translations the sources lack, including most Japanese and Korean, the sentences written for the app, the choice of which of the dictionary's own meanings each character shows first, the topics each character is grouped under for Focus, and the checks every sentence passed for natural, correct Chinese were prepared with the help of AI and then reviewed by us. Every source is named on the Credits screen inside the app, and the dictionary the app builds is available under the same licence, as described here.

I found a mistake in a character

Please tell us, with the character and what is wrong. The meanings come from those dictionaries and most sentences from Tatoeba, so a mistake is either ours in the processing or theirs in the data, and both are worth fixing.

Deleting everything

Delete the app. To remove the synced copy too, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage, and choose Hanzi Keeper.
